Specially designed to improve tolerance to high-G maneuvers and help prevent G-induced loss of consciousness (GLOC), the COMBAT EDGE pressure breathing for G (PBG) system is the standard for all U.S. Air Force F-15 and F-16 aircrew. This highly advanced technology ensemble provides pilots with a decisive edge in combat and by providing greater endurance during high-performance maneuvers up to +9 Gs while reducing fatigue that can compromise mission performance.

Gentex now offers the lightweight HGU-55/P helmet configured for COMBAT EDGE and other improvements to save technician installation time and cost. The helmet comes standard with a KMU-511/P bladder with the Quick-disconnect installed, Gentex X Liner™ for improved comfort and stability, 600-knot clear and neutral MBU-20/P oxygen mask trim bungee visors with friction strip installed, and our new anti-snag bayonet receiver spacer. The COMBAT EDGE helmet is also predrilled for installation of Night Vision Goggle (NVG) mounting brackets (for the Banana Bar).

COMBAT EDGE Components interface with the COMBAT EDGE aircraft-mounted breathing regulator and anti-G valve which serves as a sensor for increased pressure beyond the operational threshold level of 4 G. The anti-G valve sends a pressure signal to the regulator that in turn, increases the pressure of the pilot's oxygen-enriched air up to 1.2 psi above ambient. During PBG, pressurized breathing gas is simultaneously routed by the Integrated Terminal Block to the Oxygen Mask and mask tensioning bladder in the rear of the Helmet as well as the Counter Pressure Vest that inflates to apply pressure to the pilot's chest in order to balance the breathing pressure supplied to the lungs. This counter- pressure prevents forced expansion of the chest cavity and significantly reduces the work required to breath under pressure. Ultimately, the COMBAT EDGE System maintains pressure in the pilot's chest cavity to help the heart pump blood to the eyes and brain while inhibiting the downward blood flow. While COMBAT EDGE does not replace the straining maneuver of tensing the upper body muscles and abdomen normally used during high-G flight, it significantly reduces the effort required to execute it.

Gentex COMBAT EDGE Components are used in conjunction with the standard CSU-13B/P anti-G suit and are compatible with all aircrew life support equipment, such as flight suits, life preservers and parachute harnesses, as well as standard communications and emergency oxygen systems. All manworn components are available in sizes to fit the 3rd through 97th percentile USAF male aircrew member.
