Designed by Gentex to meet the rigorous requirements of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps in today's high-G environment, the HGU-68/P Tactical Aircrew (TACAIR) helmet incorporates advanced technology to provide improved helmet comfort, stability, retention and protection for aircrew personnel.
The helmet is equipped with a single visor system that qualifies at 600 KEAS (knots equivalent airspeed) in accordance with MIL-H-85047A and offers a cut back frontal opening at the temple region to provide maximum peripheral vision.
The helmet is a rigid composite made of pressure molded, laminated graphite and ballistic nylon, Graphlon®. A leather edgeroll covers the soft, foam core periphery of the helmet shell and a pile fastener fabric lines the inside of the helmet to attach the earcups.
The primary impact attenuation medium is the traditional one-half inch Styrofoam energy absorbing liner and a preformed ThermoPlastic Liner (TPL®). It features a removable and launderable foam and cotton/polyester cover, and creates an easily fitted, lightweight, comfortable custom helmet liner.
The HGU-68/P's innovative single track visor kit provides the lowest possible profile to prevent aircraft canopy interference. The assembly locks to the left of center to further enhance the profile and a special latch system allows a quick change of mission-specific visors, such as laser visors, high contrast visors and gradient visors, before flight.
A CX-4708A/AIC cord (modified with extended length pins), H-87B/U earphones and lightweight tapered earcups provide superior communications while leather earpads enhance the helmet's "glove fit" feel. Lightweight bayonet receivers, adjusted during the helmet and oxygen mask fitting processes are provided to reduce weight and profile of the overall helmet system.
